Distance if New Jersey employed normal left turns: 1.6 miles
Actual road distance: 3.0 miles
I still don't understand. It's not like they don't have room for a left turning lane. They just choose to have a grass median instead.

welcome back to the neighborhood, friend, where streets are numbered logically and named with tree names, and it is always pretty clear where east, west, north, and south are.
Unfortunately, making traffic stop for left-turns slows up flow, and in a high-volume situation (which all of Jersey is), it becomes necessary to force people to make U-turns and lefts at controlled locations. Of course, if they had designed it more friendly to bicycles, you could've just biked there and casually rode across the median...

Batman - I guess I was thinking of an arrangement similar to what I've seen in Pennslyvania, where the entire center lane is reserved for left turns from either side, which doesn't entail extra traffic stops.
I guess though I've only seen that in relatively low-volume situations, with one lane on either side. I can see how that might not work in a high volume situation.
ah but that is one of the joys of living in the garden state!

You could have just taken the local road, instead of taking the high way.
Sometimes Google Map take you onto a longer way, so it needs people to find a better way by themselves.
